Why the artist’s new exhibition at the Tate is pretty much flawless.
Are you getting that feeling that the world is folding in on itself? Nations are shutting up shop. Closing borders. Withdrawing in.
It’s at times like this that the artists’ eye comes in handy. Primed to see the world in a new or different way, they can remind us about what we are missing. Blow away the cobwebs.
Wolfgang Tillmans is one such artist. His new exhibition at the Tate Modern (15 Feb-11 Jun) is like a whistle-stop tour of both the inner and outter world. Noting details that most of us miss, his work is ambiguous and sometimes joyous. It keeps you rooted in the moment. Lots of moments, with people you understand – and people you don’t. It made me feel great, actually. It made me feel like the world is fucked up but it’s beautiful too. It warned me about humanity – what we’re all capable of. But it also gave me hope. Hope that there ARE others out there that see the world for what it is: a beautiful, complex jewel that may sometimes cut you, but definitely should be treasured and protected.
So let’s get out there.
