The revelation that the Mona Lisa may have second ‘real’ portrait hidden underneath the surface caused Twitter to freak out this morning.
French scientist Pascal Cotte claimed an image reconstructed underneath the surface of the painting using reflective light technology is Leonardo’s original Lisa – and that the portrait named Mona Lisa for more than 500 years is, in fact, a different woman.
The revelations, which are made in a BBC documentary aired tomorrow night, were reported by BBC news on Tuesday morning.
The story soon started trending on Twitter and the ‘true’ identity of the world’s most famous portrait became a meme.
Like all art debates, some remained unimpressed with Leonardo’s talent.
This view is not new. For century’s the merits of Leonardo’s portrait have caused discussion, with some feeling they can do much better.
One tweeter expressed their rather One-Direction-centric view of art criticism earlier this month.
While other One Direction fans have touched on the painting’s idealised beauty to express their own thoughts of the universe and it’s curious workings.
Clearly the centry’s old debate surrounding the enigma of the Mona Lisa doesn’t look set to end anytime soon.
